Dear reader,
You haven't aged a day :). Please dear friend, rest your feet.
It was the 28th of August, the day of my papa's birthday. Isabella and I had missed our connection flight in Munich, which led us to stay overnight in a resort. I bought some groceries for dinner and we sat on a terrace under the full moon. We are approaching the Chinese Moon Festival, the time of the year when the moon is closest to the Earth. For that reason the moon appeared larger and more glorious that night.
It is surprising what staring at the moon will do. I found myself reflecting my age (I was to turn 25 the next day), I began to reassess my purpose, and my position in life. My initial thoughts were: halfway to 50, you'd better get a walking stick soon, Danny. :) Then another thought entered my mind: what if I was the moon? What if I was looking down at myself?
Now believe me, there was no wine in my hand that night, and I was wide awake. :) It just begged the question: would the moon ever question it's position in the sky? Would it ever question it's age?
The moon to me remains mysterious and ominous. If we think of its literal effects it is one of the the greatest influencers on the planet. Its mere presence changes everything.
That night I thought it was symbolic. See it as the one thing we strive to become, the single great thing that we all hope to achieve. Some will call it fame, some will call it money. What I am guessing is that to be like the moon is to be completely the master of our own destiny. It is like the tarot cards suggest, the moon is our dreams, desires, our subconscious mind. It remains the biggest influence of them all.
I realized that life will give you balloons on a string instead of that moon. Life wants to influence you in all sorts of ways. These balloons are your petty desires and distractions. They are comfortable, light weight, colourful and cheap. You can hold many of them at the same time, and you can even let some go, and it feels good to hold something expendable. You can pop them (bang bang), or fold them up into all sorts of shapes (it doesn't change what they are). You can let them go and replace them, but there will always be more. They never last and having a hundred is just the same as having one.
Yet, there is only one moon. One dream that belongs to you. One grounding purpose that defines you, which you want the world to see. It is too great to pull along the sky and you will feel overwhelmed in the possibility of doing so. Yet, when you hold onto it, even though you feel you are not moving forward, you forget how heavy it is. You just feel completeness when tethered to it. It's like going home . A warm feeling of oneness inside. Once we re-align ourselves with that purpose, or dream, life becomes beautiful again. Do you know what it is to you?
The other part of the moon refers to transformation. Whether you look at werewolves, or the old wife's tale, haha. It is legend and folk lore that the moon will change you. I view this as the discomfort one feels when following their dreams. Those on the correct path should be in a state of continual discomfort. That is transformation. Our dreams and desires are not limited by our age, nor by time, but by our willingness to do the impossible. Our lives must transform daily for any expansion to occur.
I am now 25, older, but perhaps none the wiser. Yet, if I remember one thing, it would be to strive to be the source of influence in our lives, and not to be only influenced. To never forget your purpose in the world, and how you are influencing people right now in your actions and your non-actions, and to remember how influential you are. As the Dalai Lama said: 'If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.'
Like the moon, a single action in a day can change another's life completely. That night I saw in the moon, the one life that I had: a precious gift. and the pursuit of one great thing in that life that could be reaching my potential, changing something or someone for the better. This is the power that lies in all, the power to do what is right in following our dreams.
Have an amazing week ahead.
